The Kissing Hand

On the first day of school we read The Kissing Hand
By: Audrey Penn

It is such a sweet book for the start of the school year. It is about a mom sending her raccoon son, Chester, off to school. He is a little nervous and scared to go to school, at first. But Chester's mother tries to help him, and gives him a kiss on the hand. She tells him... "whenever you feel lonely and need a little loving from home, just press your hand to your cheek and think, 'Mommy loves you, Mommy loves you', and that very kiss will jump to your face and fill you with toast warm thoughts." This helps Chester feel better about the start of school, and at the end of the book before he leaves for school, he asks Mrs. Raccoon to hold out HER hand. Chester gives her a kiss on her own hand. The Kissing Hand is such a great book for primary kiddos starting school.

After we read this sweet story, we did an activity! We traced our hands and put a heart/kiss in the middle. Everyone took theirs home to give to someone they love and miss.
